What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
At its core, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) operates on the principle that your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are inextricably linked. When you experience “unhelpful thoughts”—often referred to as cognitive distortions—they act like a tinted lens through which you view your entire existence. If your lens is clouded by “all-or-nothing” thinking or “catastrophizing,” your brain perceives a reality that is far more threatening or bleak than the objective facts suggest. CBT helps you identify these habitual mental shortcuts, teaching you to catch them in the moment and subject them to a “trial of evidence.” By challenging the validity of these thoughts, you strip them of their emotional power, effectively cleaning the lens through which you see the world.
This isn't about “positive thinking” or ignoring problems; it's about cognitive restructuring—replacing “I am a failure” with “I am currently facing a specific challenge that I can learn from.”
The process of creating a “new reality” begins with the neuroplasticity of the brain. When you consistently interrupt a negative thought loop and replace it with a more balanced, evidence-based perspective, you are physically strengthening new neural pathways.
